Ad of the Day – March 4 (London)

Your daily dose of advertising awesomeness from around the world!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: McCann
  • Location: London
  • Client: Sony Xperia Z
  • Name: “Be Moved”
  • Category: Film

Why I like it: I love so much about this ad, let me count the many ways… It’s immediately interesting: From the first piano keys to the crowd of people, the foot standing on tip-toe to get a better view…it made me want to get a better view too! It’s perfectly branded: The retro-prelude showing the yellow sports Walkman instantly sears this in the mind as a Sony ad, at that point the message has been delivered that this is from Sony.  It’s sneakily emotional: That retro touch was just right, and very crafty. The appeal to nostalgia is a very powerful emotion, and Sony products play a credible role in this historical recap. The executional choices are right on: The slow motion camera, the retro styling, the David Bowie sound track, the India location…all great decisions that add to the narrative without stealing the focus. And finally, the benefit is clear and persuasive: Far from being self indulgent, this ad seamlessly shows off the photographic prowess of the phone, and even goes as far as showing a secondary benefit (water/dust resistant) that sticks in the mind for its uniqueness. Who said making these things was easy? Who said only Apple and Samsung has a say? Here’s a strong contender from Sony and McCann!
