Today’s pick:

  • Agency: BBDO
  • Location: Zurich
  • Client: Nu Schweiz (anti-aging cream)
  • Name: Find the teacher
  • Category: Print
  • Why I like it: When advertisers talk about pushing  the consumer to “act”, most of the time what we mean is to drive them to purchase, or to go to the website, or some other means of getting closer to the sale. The ad is just the stepping stone, and the call to action aims to get you beyond the ad as soon as possible. Well, what if the purpose of the call to action were…to drive you to interact with ad on a deeper level? It’s a bit of an unusual approach, but it works wonderfully in this ad. People love puzzles, and as you accept the invitation to find the teacher, every second you spend on it is a second that reaffirms the product benefit. Quite brilliant, actually.

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Advico Y&R
  • Location: Zurich
  • Client: Total (detergent)
  • Name: “Penguins”
  • Category: Print

Why I like it: When absolutely all has been said and done, sometimes the way in which you execute can make a standard benefit feel fresh, even interesting. Every choice made in this print ad is well-taken, if simple – from the style of illustration, to the typography, to the snowflakes and subtle lens flare, and more. And best of all, they are in the service of clearly communicating the product benefit. It really doesn’t need to be any more complicated than this…

Ad of the Day – March 11 (Zurich)

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Jung Von Matt/Limat
  • Location: Zurich
  • Client: Max Shoes
  • Name: “Stunning Collection”
  • Category: Print/OOH

Why I like it: Let’s say I’m in need of a print campaign. I would ask you to come up with some ideas. They need to be extremely simple, almost iconic, one glance and you get the message. Ideally the ads would feature the product front and center, because it’s a visual medium and I want my product to be visible. And mind you, I said I wanted simple, but this does not mean mediocre or boring or traditional…there should be some sort of exciting visual or written creative hook that I haven’t seen before, something that catches the eye and makes the ad stick in the memory. Finally, since my product is fashion-related, the styling and art direction should be top-notch. You might think that I’m asking for too many things at once. Then I would show you these ads as a reference, and you would think to yourself “Damn, ok. So, it can be done. Guess I’d better go and have a think.” Nice, nice work by the folks in Zurich!

Ad of the Day – Oct 13 (Zurich)

Every morning I scour the web and look at 10 random ads (in any medium) from around the non-US world. Then I post for you my Ad of the Day. Some days it will be awesome, some days you might not like it. But it’s the Ad of the Day!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Jung von Matt/Limmat
  • Location:Zurich, Switzerland
  • Client: Pro Infirmis
  • Name: “Get Closer”
  • Why I like it: It’s very risky in advertising to go with a strong hook, and then, only at the very end, plug in the brand and the brand message. 99.5% of the time it doesn’t work, because the link is not as strong as the hook, and all at that remains in the memory is the “interesting” part of the ad. This is one of those 0.5% when it does work. This ad made me wonder, then it made me happy, and then it made me reflect about the advertiser and their message. What more can one ask for? Really, really, really well done! Congratulations to the folks at Jung von Matt/Limmat for the first “Ad of the Day” from Switzerland.
