Ad of the Day – October 12 (Vienna)

Why I like it: I like it because it rocks my Friday morning and gets me in the mood for the weekend! We’ve said a few times before that if you can’t be completely original, you can still be extremely successful by taking something that’s known, and putting a different, unique spin on it. let’s look at this ad – Typical setting? check. Appropriately multi-racial cast? check. Theme of youth rebellion against authority/rules? check. Mild sex appeal? check. Badass dubstep track and dance moves? double-check. So far, nice but safe: you’ve seen this type of ad before. Now…the “silent” scenes, which instantly make the whole thing a little self-mocking, a little ridiculous and self-indulgent, but knowingly so? Whoa. Awesome. Those silent scenes make all the difference, and turn this from a typical ad to something worth sharing, straight out of Vienna. Have a rocking weekend, everyone.

PS – If you didn’t know what a Sony Walkman was…shame on you:) Back in ancient history, before iPods, there was a time when music used to come in these cartridges called “cassettes”, and the walkman was the first time you could take your music on the go. I saved up and bought the very first model, (I was 10) and I remember it with such fondness…

Ad of the Day – December 13 (Vienna)

Every morning I scour the web and look at the latest ads (in any medium) from around the non-US world. Then I post for you my Ad of the Day. Some days it will be awesome, some days you might not like it. But it’s the Ad of the Day!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Tribal DDB
  • Location: Vienna, Austria
  • Client: McCafe (McDonald’s)
  • Name: “a.m…p.m”
  • Why I like it: Ah, how I love the simple brilliance of these print ads. If there is a simpler, more bang-on visual encapsulation of what coffee does for us, what it means for us in the morning…well I’d like to see it. These layouts just distill it down to the very essence of what McCafe promises. Superb! Now, nothing is perfect – you know what I would have done to make it even better? I would have flipped the order of the pictures, showing the awake picture on the left and the sleepy on the right…that way the am/pm could also stand for “after McCafe” and “pre McCafe”. (Yes, I know. You’re welcome, DDB!) By the way, this is our very first ad of the day from Austria!
