Ad of the Day – August 2 (New York)

Your daily dose of advertising awesomeness from around the world!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Ogilvy
  • Location: New York
  • Client: British Airways
  • Name: A ticket to visit mum
  • Category: Film

Why I like it: Wow…just, wow. I was hooked from the start, was a mess by the halfway mark, and enjoyed every second of the 5 minutes (which is extremely long for a branded video.) What’s the secret? The obvious one is the love that binds moms and sons together…it’s as universal as the air we breathe, and yet it’s obviousness doesn’t make it any less powerful as a driving idea for an ad. But I’d suggest that what makes this one really stand out is the richness…the texture in the way the story is told. From the colors, to his description of his memories, to the spices, to the specific depiction of food, to the lovely accents, to the faces, expressions and reactions of the protagonists, and more. The story is quite plain…but the loving attention to detail makes the final result shine brightly. Manipulative? That’s when a story takes from you emotionally, but doesn’t give you anything in return – and here there is plenty shared and given, so…no, not at all. It’s a lovely video, centered around a sound business strategy, and featuring an appropriate role for the brand. I wish I had worked on this:) Congrats to my colleagues in New York!

Ad of the Day – February 15 (London)

Your daily dose of advertising awesomeness from around the world!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: BBH London
  • Location: London
  • Client: British Airways
  • Name: “The Race”

Why I like it: I try not to have the same agency and city back too soon…and BBH London has been here before, as recently as only 12 days ago for their work on Axe. But hey, when the work is good, the work is good! In their latest ad for BA they took an important-but-pretty-dull consumer benefit (network logistics), and turned it into something engaging, suspenseful, and imbued with a warm, human touch through the use of the little girl. This is an ad that I would enjoy watching, and would leave me with good feelings (both rational and emotional) towards BA. What else can you ask for? If you think this is easy to do, go to Youtube and look through some airline advertising. Right. BBH London, you guys are killing the rest of it. Stop it. Actually, don’t.
