Ad of the Day: December 11 (Wellington)

Your daily dose of advertising awesomeness from around the world!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Wellington
  • Client: New Zealand Transport Agency
  • Name: Local Legends
  • Category: Film
  • Why I like it: Engaging storytelling, with a purpose. It’s simple as that. The characters here are so richly painted, so quickly…it’s as if there is a full, real universe happening around these people, and we just happened to get a peek at a 2 minute sliver of it. It hooks you from the beginning, and it delivers the message with exactly the proper tone. By the way, anti-drunk driving might sound like an easy assignment, but when you get into it I’m sure you’ll find that it has been already done a million different ways, and most of them flop. And yet this client/agency combo has been doing exceptional work for the last few years (look them up,) always hitting the right tone in a fresh and different manner. Pretty amazing.

Ad of the Day – January 9 (Wellington)

Your daily dose of advertising awesomeness from around the world!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Wellington, New Zealand
  • Client: NZ Transport Agency
  • Name: Mistakes
  • Category: Film
  • Why I like it: If you’re going to manipulate my emotions…at least do it with flair. If you’re going to hit me hard with a serious message that dampens my mood and leaves me thinking…at least hit me from an angle I haven’t been hit from before. Boy, does this ad deliver. It manages to capture on film the horrible split second of regret, confusion and foreboding that surges through your mind before an accident. The next-to-last shot (where he looks at the son) is devastating, and leaves you reflecting without having to preach. Effective, innovative, and sure to be award-winning – coming at us from New Zealand.

Ad of the Day – March 14 (Melbourne)

WATCH THE VIDEO WITHOUT READING THE TITLE OF THE VIDEO AT THE BOTTOM OF THE YOUTUBE SCREEN

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Melbourne
  • Client: Not telling you
  • Name: Not telling
  • Category: Film

Why I like it: Ha! Let’s start with the obvious. This is so perfectly executed. Every detail. The casting, the post-dinner homey setting, the music, the dialogue (love the bit at the end about the kids), the music, the close-ups (quivering chin, teary eye), the wardrobe…I could go on with a long list. The point here is that the difference between good and great is not always one burst of brilliant inspiration, it’s often a collection of dozens of small details that, when all combined just right, make something just…work. Just great! (but half the effect is ruined if you look at the name of the youtube video. What an oversight!) Looking a little deeper at this ad, I’m in admiration of the idea: “find out you’re not funny”. Go see funny people and realize, in comparison, how un-funny you actually are, how un-funny you’ve been all these years! That is such a fresh, unique, and interesting look at the topic:) I think most people will take it for granted because the execution is so spot-on, but there is a lot of merit in coming up with this new approach – it must have been a great brief to work with. This ad shines because of a perfect balance of idea and execution. Spot on!

Ad of the Day – November 26 (Melbourne)

Your daily dose of advertising awesomeness from around the world!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Melbourne
  • Client: Dirty Granny (Apple Cider)
  • Name: “Tom, Richard & Ken”
  • Category: Print, OOH

Why I like it: A print ad should catch your attention in the first 2 seconds, or you’ve lost the reader. This one catches your attention, and holds it…you smile, look at the bottle, think of the name of the product, look at the man, then back at the bottle, then smile again, then remark on the product name once again, filing it in your memory bank…what else can you ask for? Much good advertising is born from a great product. And a cider called “Dirty Granny” (by the way, Granny Smith is a variety of green apple)is simply begging for some great work. But then you still have to execute it, and the trick is to be edgy but accessible, funny but not over-the-top. Many would take it too far, and fail for being too obvious. Here I think they nail it with amazing casting, sharp photography, fantastic art direction, and great copywriting (and by great copywriting, I mean resisting the temptation to include copy where none is needed!). Cheers to that.

Ad of the Day – August 31 (Melbourne)

Your daily dose of advertising awesomeness from around the world!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Melbourne
  • Client: Carlton Draught
  • Name: “Beer Chase”
  • Category: Film

Why I like it: It’s so hard to do “funny” properly…and here I think they nail it. A crazy premise delivered in a serious, go-all-the-way manner, just lovingly executed. From the premise, to the little details like the awesome soundtrack, the movie cliches, the slow-down scene at the roadblock, etc. Nothing revolutionary about the “idea” in this ad, it’s the execution that makes it work! I was at a workshop earlier this week where an interesting thought was raised: in some categories (beer?) where there is nothing really new left to say, or where you very seldom get a truly new insight/idea, there is still a way to shine and innovate: by having your execution be the “idea”. So instead of “a good story (idea) well told (execution)”, what stands out in these categories is “a really amazing way (execution) to tell a story (idea)”. Worth a thought. Well done to the crew at Clemenger, whose past effort for Carlton beer was featured here and was a lion winner at Cannes!

Ad of the Day – December 2 (Melbourne)

Every morning I scour the web and look at the latest ads (in any medium) from around the non-US world. Then I post for you my Ad of the Day. Some days it will be awesome, some days you might not like it. But it’s the Ad of the Day!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Melbourne, Australia
  • Client: Bupa (A healthcare insurance provider)
  • Name: “The moment”
  • Why I like it: Wow. I’ve always believed that some categories are more “fertile ground” for creative ideas than others. Beer, for example, is towards the top. And I would have put health insurance towards the bottom of the pile. So man, did this one surprise me. A fantastic human insight, fueling a “you-know-it’s-good-as-soon-as-you hear-it” idea, brought to life flawlessly on-screen (and across other media as well, that’s the thing about great ideas, they travel). This, my friends, is what it’s all about. It’s such an inspired ad that it makes me happy to be in the ad business. Kudos to the folks at Clemenger BBDO, who have shown they know how to be creative on both ends of the spectrum. That’s talent!

Ad of the Day – November 25 (Melbourne)

Every morning I scour the web and look at the latest ads (in any medium) from around the non-US world. Then I post for you my Ad of the Day. Some days it will be awesome, some days you might not like it. But it’s the Ad of the Day!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Melbourne, Australia
  • Client: Carlton MID (beer)
  • Name: “Redheads”
  • Why I like it: A neat insight (not terribly original, but I’m starting to think that nothing in the beer category will ever be…), but with great copywriting, and great art direction (from the casting, to the typography, to the warmth of the layout). It’s looks simple when it works, but oh is it hard to get there! I enjoyed this, I’d be happy to have it on my reel. It’s also a reminder that it’s Friday…so go out and get yourselves a beer! Brought to you by Clemenger BBDO in Australia, so you can thank them for it:)

Ad of the Day – Oct 27 (Wellington)

Every morning I scour the web and look at the latest ads (in any medium) from around the non-US world. Then I post for you my Ad of the Day. Some days it will be awesome, some days you might not like it. But it’s the Ad of the Day!

Today’s pick:

  • Agency: Clemenger BBDO
  • Location: Wellington, New Zealand
  • Client: NZ Transport Agency
  • Name: “Legend”
  • Why I like it: I give it high scores for tackling a difficult challenge with the right, subtle touch. When talking to teens about anything, authenticity is about the most important thing you can have. And it’s especially hard to hit the right note when you’re talking to them about booze, drugs & sex. Most often it comes off looking like the effort of hopelessly out-of-touch old people. This one, I thought got the tone quite right. Not over the top, but not underselling it either. The right dose of humor, a good execution, and great casting and acting. Yesterday our Ad of the Day was from Contrapunto BBDO, today it’s another agency in the hyper-creative BBDO network, but exactly on the other side of the world.. Well done, Kiwis!
